Decay or early loss of baby teeth for any reason causes the surrounding teeth to move towards the cavity formed due to tooth loss and causes a distorted formation in the tooth structure. A placeholder application is applied to the empty primary tooth area until the permanent teeth erupt, and this area is protected.
Since placeholders are custom made, they are both easy to apply and use. Depending on the number, location and development of the lost tooth, the placeholder application can be applied as fixed or mobile.
Types of placeholders:
Lingual Arc
It is applied in multiple or bilateral tooth loss in the lower jaw. This type of placeholder is applied if the location of more than one tooth is to be preserved. It is easy to use as it is a fixed placeholder.
Nance Appliance
It is applied when there is more than one tooth loss in the upper jaw. Supported by the molars, it leans against the palate dome by means of a button. Since it is supported by the dome of the palate, the molars are prevented from sliding forward. It is easy to use.
Band Loop Placeholder
It can be applied unilaterally or bilaterally in case of a single tooth loss in the upper or lower jaw. It is very easy to use. It can be easily removed when permanent teeth begin to erupt. These types of placeholders take up less space and do not require adaptation in children.
Transpalatal Arc
It is also used when there is more than one tooth loss in the upper jaw. By taking support from the molars, it prevents the molars from slipping into the extraction space. It is a fixed appliance.
